Hundreds of runners completed a scenic, but challenging 15-mile race in Charleston Saturday.
The Charleston Distance Run got underway with a bang, boosting attendance this year with a relay race and 5K run for those who did not want to run the distance.
Started in 1973 as part of the Charleston Sternwheel Regatta, the 15-mile run has been a standalone event since 2008 when the festival sank. The course starts at the state Capitol, but gets serious in a five-mile hill section.
It was humid when the race started, and dozens of volunteers kept the event going and helped keep some of the runners going. The top runners set an intense, but not record pace. Others met their personal goals completing the event.
Kiprono Kurgat, a Kenyan training in Chapel Hill N.C. crossed the finish line first.
The top three overall male winners in the distance run 15 miler were:
1. Kiprono Kurgat; Time: 1:16:29.1; Pace 5:06
The top three overall female winners in the distance run 15 miler were:
1. Susan Jerotich; Time: 1:31:05.6; Pace: 6:05
The local favorite, a Jackson County teacher who won last year, came in fifth, but for many of the runners, wherever they placed, it was their personal best.
