Poca , Putnam County , West Virginia
Airgas is closing its facility on Route 62 North in Poca in Putnam County effective Wednesday, the company said.
The company said 12 workers at the facility have received severance packages.
Airgas USA, LLC Mid America region, made the announcement in a news release and said none of the other six Airgas locations in the region will be affected.
The facility was the site of a series of explosions in May that injured two workers, and a minor fire occurred there in July.
In a statement the company said the closure of the facility is not the result of the May fire and explosion.
“However, the subsequent temporary shutdown and reduced level of operations did accelerate an evaluation of the facility,” the company said. “The process of sending cylinders out to alternate Airgas locations in the region for filling has been running smoothly, and showed a lesser need for the plant in Poca. Therefore, it was determined to no longer be efficient from a cost perspective to continue to operate the facility.
The Airgas Poca facility, near Bancroft, is a low- to mid-volume cylinder fill plant.
