Dog owners across the country are spoiling their four-legged friends Monday for National Dog Day.
The annual appreciation day got its start in 2004. National Dog Day was created by pet lifestyle expert and author Colleen Paige as a way for pet owners to show appreciation for all dogs do in our lives. It's also helps to bring attention to the number of dogs that need love, affection, and a home.
One way people can celebrate National Dog Day is by adopting a dog from their local animal shelter. More than 200 dogs were left at the Kanawha-Charleston Humane Association this month.
"We are just celebrating dogs nationwide obviously and especially here at the Kanawha-Charleston animal shelter," said Chelsea Staley, executive director of the Kanawha-Charleston Humane Association. "We are inviting the public to walk a dog today and come and celebrate with them about everything it means to be a dog."
The Kanawha-Charleston Humane Association currently has 97 dogs up for adoption, 24 of those were dropped off at the shelter since Friday.
