The victim in an alleged beating by a Marshall University basketball player spoke out Friday night.
Mazen Younis said he saw a man beating on his girlfriend and, when he tried to break it up, he had no idea the man was a star athlete.
Younis said when he saw the physical fight between a couple last fall, his training kicked in.
"I’m in the National Guard,” he said. “The first thing that came to my mind, ‘Help somebody.’"
Younis said he tried to break up a fight between Marshall star basketball player Elijah Pittman and his girlfriend.
"He was smacking her around," Younis said.
When Younis intervened in the parking lot behind an apartment complex on 20th Street, police said Pittman then started assaulting Younis.
"He looked at me like he really wanted to break my face,” Younis said.
Younis had to go to the hospital with a concussion, broken nose and facial fractures.
Pittman has been indicted on a misdemeanor battery charge.
Marshall University Athletics released a statement saying, "We were aware of the issue and it is being dealt with internally and appropriately."
Meanwhile, Pittman is out on bond and was leading the team this past week as they played exhibition games in Canada.
His alleged victim said it's not right.
"I'm sorry I'm not an athlete,” Younis said. “I don't get special treatment!"
Younis demands justice and said he wouldn't have done anything differently.
Pittman is expected to be in court in early September.
