The author behind the top earning movie in the country this week is set to appear at the University of Charleston.
Washington Post writer Wil Haygood, author of "The Butler: A Witness to History," will conduct a book signing and discussion at the university on Sept. 24.
Haygood’s book is an expansion of his 2008 article for the Post, "A Butler Well Served by This Election," which served as the inspiration for the film “The Butler,” directed by Lee Daniels.
The film, starring Forest Whitaker and Oprah Winfrey, debuted at first place with a U.S. box office gross of $24.6 million.
Haygood, a native of Columbus, Ohio, worked at the Charleston Gazette in the early 1980s as a copy editor, where he also wrote several feature articles and reviews. His other best-selling works include “In Black and White: The Life of Sammy Davis Jr." and "King of Cats: The Life and Times of Adam Clayton Powell Jr."
Haygood will sign books in Riggleman Hall at the university from 5 to 6 p.m. His discussion in Geary Auditorum is set to begin at 6:30 p.m.
