Springfield , Gallia County , Ohio
Police said a large marijuana bust in Ohio took a dangerous turn Thursday, but it could have gone a whole lot worse.
Corey Willis likes his neighborhood in Springfield Township quiet, but that was not case when deputies tried to arrest James Williams during what they thought would be your “everyday” pot bust.
"It’s huge when something like that happens," Williams said.
Gallia County Sheriff’s deputies went to William's home Thursday morning on Woodsmill Road, after several complaints that he was growing and processing pot inside his home.
Once they got there, police said Williams admitted to having a grow room.
But when cops got a warrant to search an outside building, they said Williams became violent, getting into a brawl with one deputy and punching him in the face.
Police said a Taser eventually had to be used on him.
Once inside, the shed they said they found 20 to 30 marijuana plants, along with some weed already processed.
There was also a tripwire involving a 12-gauge shotgun shell and a rat trap.
No one was injured, but the news set off one dad in the neighborhood.
"I think of my wife and my kids," Willis said.
Willis said crime has been on the rise and, as school starts back up, he's glad to see the good guys cracking down.
"Very comforting,” he said. “We absolutely depend on our law enforcement around here to keep our families safe."
The sheriff said they are working with the prosecutor to tack on more charges.
A man is facing charges after deputies said they were assaulted after discovering a booby-trapped pot growing operation in Gallia County.
James M. Williams, 49, of Springfield was charged Thursday with assault and weapons under disability. Deputies said more charges could be pending.
The Gallia County Sheriff's Department said they got several tips about an indoor marijuana growing operation at a home in the Springfield township. Deputies said they spoke with the residents and they admitted to the operation. Deputies said they searched the property and the owner became aggressive. The suspect struggled with deputies and punched one in the face, they said. A Taser was used on the suspect and he was arrested.
Deputies said they found 34 total suspected marijuana plants, 30 suspected marijuana starter plants, weapons, and two ATVs. Some of the plants were booby-trapped with a tripwire and a shotgun, deputies said.
