The average score of West Virginia students taking the ACT college exam remained the same as a year ago.
Test scores in West Virginia this year averaged 20.6, the same as the year before.
Students improved slightly in science with a score of 20.6, had the same score in reading at 21.3, and had slight declines in English (20.5) and math (19.5).
Nationally, average overall scores dropped from 21.1 to 20.9, although nearly 130,000 more students took the test. West Virginia saw a drop of 300 test takers.
The Herald-Dispatch reported only 20 percent of students met all four college readiness benchmarks, which are used to indicate a student has at least a 50 percent chance of getting a grade of B or higher in first-year college courses.
