While thousands of West Virginians remained without power Thursday, the National Weather Service issued a flash flood watch for many counties in the state beginning this afternoon.
The National Weather Service said the watch begins at 2 p.m. Thursday and extends through 11 a.m. Friday. The counties under that watch include Cabell, Mason, Jackson, Lincoln, Putnam, Kanawha and Roane, Wirt, Calhoun, Boone, Clay and Braxton. You can always view our Weather Warn System online
Appalachian Power's website said more than 2,200 customers had no electrical service in West Virginia as of about 9 a.m. Thursday, including about 1,700 in Kanawha County. About 2,000 Mon Power customers in Harrison County were without service. The outages were attributed to violent summer storms that hit the area Wednesday night.
The storms caused a hillside to collapse in South Charleston, and media outlets report several people had to be rescued from high water in Kanawha County.
The weather service said more storms were expected Thursday that could bring local downpours, although no widespread flash flooding is anticipated. Eyewitness News Meteorologist Brandon Stover said strong thunderstorms were possible from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m. The ground is saturated in many areas, so any significant rainfall could result in some flooding, Stover said.
