Charleston , Kanawha County , West Virginia
Strong storms swept through the Eyewitness News viewing area Wednesday night.
The hardest hit areas were Kanawha, Cabell and Lincoln counties. At the peak of the storm, more than 3500 people in Kanawha County were without power.
High water and other damage were reported throughout the area.
High water, trees down and some water rescues kept emergency workers busy in Cross Lanes.
Urban street flooding left some motorists trapped in high water in Charleston and turned roads dangerously slick.
Three people were trapped in a car that got stuck in the water in the Court Street underpass. Rather than wait for rescue, they waded out of rising water with the help of two people passing by the area. The rain came in in intense, wind driven sheets, dropping more than an inch of water in a hour with unpleasant results.
The high water also flooded the Virginia Street underpass near a city fire station. Many urban streets had several inches of water standing on them during the height of the flash flooding. The National Weather Service and firefighters both warned drivers not to drive through standing water.
