A child wandering off is a parent’s worst nightmare.
For the Shafer family, that nightmare came true Tuesday after their 4-year-old son wandered from daycare and those in charge.
"Everything turned out in a good manner, but there's so many possibilities that could have happened," the boy’s father, Joey Shafer said.
Joey and Melissa Shafer are thankful their son, Cameron, is home safe and sound.
On Tuesday, the toddler slipped out of the hands of his caretakers at the South Charleston Enrichment Center.
Police said the child had been missing for close to a half an hour.
"This is his second day,” Melissa Shafer said. “He's never been to daycare. I've stayed at home with him. This was his only experience. This is my first experience with public pre-K. Needless to say it, wasn't a positive one."
Cameron didn't wander off very far. He went next door to the Marshall University graduate school.
Marshall staff called police, but the daycare center never did.
"They still completely denied he was really out of their sight or you know left on his own," Melissa Shafer said.
The South Charleston Enrichment Center owner and director said “We are doing an investigation. We are dealing with this very aggressively, for the safety of all children at our site.”
The Shafers said Cameron will not be returning to that daycare, but they are grateful for the work of South Charleston police and the Marshall University staff for making sure their boy was returned home safely.
South Charleston police said the investigation on their side is over.
The case is now in the hands of the Kanawha County prosecuting attorney's office, who will decide whether or not charges will be filed.
