A man suspected in several grocery store robberies including one in Athens County, has been arrested after a botched attempt, deputies said
Michael J. Fette, 46, of Lancaster was arrested Sunday. The Athens County Sheriff's Department said the suspect was captured after a failed attempt in Huron County using the same method allegedly used in other robberies.
Shortly before the incident, a witness near the grocery store notified police of a suspicious vehicle, the sheriff's department said. The suspect zip-tied the employees and when managers entered the store, he fled, the sheriff's department said. Police said when the suspect ran to his car, police were already there investigating the original complaint.
Police said Fette had a handgun and $30,000 in cash from the grocery store in his possession.
The Foodland Grocery store in The Plains was robbed by a man armed with a gun in a similar fashion on July 17 in Athens County. The sheriff's department said several other counties will be filing charges against Fette.
The Athens County Sheriff's Department said the man suspected of robbing a grocery store could be connected to other robberies in other counties.
The sheriff's department said it has been notified by other departments and are reviewing surveillance videos.
At 10 p.m. Wednesday, the Foodland Grocery store in The Plains was robbed by a man armed with a gun. Detectives said the suspect forced employees to empty the safe and then used zip ties to tie up the workers. Detectives believe the suspect escaped in a light-colored, four-door vehicle.
The Athens County Sheriff's Department is investigating an armed robbery in which a man demanded workers give him money from a safe and then tied up employees.
It happened about 10 p.m. Wednesday, at the Foodland Grocery Store on The Plains.
According to a release from the Athens County Sheriff's Department, the robber first visited the store Tuesday around closing time and told employees that he lost his cell phone. He returned to the store on Wednesday and asked the store employee if he could look in the back of the store for his phone.
When he returned to the front, he pulled out a gun and told the three employees to get on the floor. He then asked them to take the money out of the safe. Deputies said he then tied the employees together with zip ties and put them in another room.
Deputies said the man left in a four door, light vehicle.
If you have any information that can help deputies you are asked to give them a call.
