A 21-month-old toddler has died from injuries received in a single-vehicle accident on Interstate 77 in Jackson County.
Jackson County Sheriff Tony Boggs said the toddler died Wednesday following the accident. The toddler's parents, Shawn and Jessica Souther, were injured in the wreck that occurred near Kenna, the sheriff said. A witness said all three were ejected from the vehicle. A hospital spokeswoman said Shawn Souther was in fair condition at Charleston Area Medical Center General Hospital and Jessica Souther was under evaulation.
The sheriff said authorities are investigating to see whether seat belts and restraints were used by the occupants of the vehicle. A witness said the child was found face down along the highway strapped to a car seat.
The accident happened about 4 p.m. Wednesday and shut down the northbound lanes of the interstate, an emergency dispatcher said. The lanes were later reopened.
The witness said a red pickup truck was heading southbound and veered into the median and started rolling. A woman was thrown over the hill, and a child in a car seat was also thrown from the vehicle and found face down in the car seat along the road. The man who was driving also was thrown from the vehicle, the witness said. The witness said he helped the woman and the child.
