Two Mingo County officials accused of corruption pleaded not guilty Wednesday in federal court in Charleston.
Mingo County Circuit Judge Michael Thornsbury said he is "absolutely not guilty" during his arraignment. The judge is charged with abusing his power and commandeering a grand jury in a failed attempt to frame a romantic rival for crimes. His trial date was set for Oct. 15, and he will remain free on $10,000 bond.
Meanwhile, Mingo County Commissioner Dave Baisden also pleaded not guilty during his arraignment. He is charged with extortion for allegedly misusing his office to try to buy tires from a county supplier at a discount. Baisden's trial was set for Oct. 21, and he will remain free on $10,000 bond.
Baisden said he has no plans to step down as county commissioner. He no longer will be the county's purchasing agent.
Mingo County Circuit Judge Michael Thornsbury said he planned to plead not guilty Wednesday morning during his arraignment in federal court.
The judge made his comments to Eyewitness News on his way to the courthouse. Thornsbury was being arraigned on charges that he abused his power and commandeering a grand jury in a failed attempt to frame a romantic rival for crimes.
Meanwhile, an arraignment also was scheduled Wednesday morning in federal court in Charleston for Mingo County Commissioner Dave Baisden. Baisden is charged with extortion for allegedly misusing his office to try to buy tires from a county supplier at a discount.
