Williamson, Mingo County , West Virginia
On a day the Mingo County Commission is scheduled to meet and arraignments were slated for two officials charged in corruption cases, residents were expected to rally outside the courthouse in Williamson.
The commission meeting begins at 9 a.m. Wednesday.
Meanwhile, arraignments are scheduled Wednesday morning in federal court in Charleston for Mingo County Circuit Judge Michael Thornsbury and Mingo County Commissioner Dave Baisden.
Thornsbury was charged Thursday with abusing his power and commandeering a grand jury in a failed attempt to frame a romantic rival for crimes. In a separate case that also has rocked Mingo County, Baisden also was arrested Thursday and charged with extortion for allegedly misusing his office to try to buy tires from a county supplier at a discount.
Protesters are expected to gather outside of the courthouse -- calling for action against Baisden. They want him removed from the commission. Others are expected to call for the removal of Homeland Security Director Jarrod Fletcher from his county position. According to the indictment, Thornsbury picked Fletcher, his friend and business partner, to head a grand jury in order to frame the judge's romantic rival. Fletcher is not being charged criminally, but local attorney Timothy Koontz said the commission should send a message and stand up for the people of Mingo County.
