Abortion rights activists are rallying against state lawmakers who are calling for stricter regulations.
Supporters of Planned Parenthood,WV Free and Stand with West Virginia Women gathered Tuesday on the lower level of the Capitol Rotunda in Charleston, to call on the state to counter calls to regulate abortion procedures. In July, lawmakers and anti-abortion groups campaigned for stricter regulations on abortion clinics. Those groups want the state to crack down on clinics by licensing providers and inspecting the facilities.
West Virginia is among 10 other states that do not require a licensed doctor to perform an abortion.
Attorney General Patrick Morrisey sent letters to abortion clinics in June, questioning their policies and practices. The clinics did not respond but abortion rights activists did at Tuesday's rally.
Margaret Chapman-Pomponio, executive director of WV Free, said Morrisey is using politics to limit abortion care in the state. She called it a political attack on women's reproductive rights.
"We're concerned that he's engaging in a misinformation campaign," Chapman-Pomponio said. "The fear is women's health providers are regulated like any other health care providers in the state of West Virginia."
The attorney general's office issued a statement saying those who attended the rally are entitled to free speech. The statement also said the regulatory standard on abortions needs tightening since terminated pregnancies are allowed until birth in West Virginia.
