A West Virginia Guardsman is being given the state's highest civilian honor. Captain Jeremy Mullins was given the "Distinguished West Virginian" award Monday by Governor Earl Ray Tomblin.
Mullins lives right across the street from where a deadly crash happened in Clay County two weeks ago, involving 11 people. He called 911, and rushed in to help, putting his military training into practice.
"It's not expected. It's not necessary for saving lives, but it is appreciated. That could be your kid or my kid, and you want somebody to step up and do the right thing in the moment as needed for individuals. You always think you could do more. I wish some parts had turned out better than they did, but you work at what you can help and move on and that's what I tried to do," Mullins said.
The Air National Guard has also nominated Mullins for the airman's award, which is the highest recognition for a soldier's civilian actions.
