The Metro Emergency Operations Center plans to upgrade its phone system on Wednesday.
The telephone upgrade will take place between 5 a.m.and 6 a.m. The Kanawha County 911 center is replacing its 8-year-old phone system to help dispatchers respond to emergency calls faster and record information more accurately. The system also will be more user friendly, said Paul Dryden, Metro Emergency Operations Center captain.
"It's going to be faster for us to process calls we receive," Dryden said. "Also with the new technology, next May of 2014, we'll be able to start receiving text messages through 911."
Dryden said service should not be an interrupted during the upgrade, especially if you are making an emergency call from a land-line phone. In the event that it does, Dryden said just hang up and call Metro 911 again. If you still can't get through, you can call the following numbers:
