The Kenova Police Department said it has a vehicle of interest in connection to an attempted abduction but it is continuing to investigate and has not confirmed whether that it was the one involved in the incident.
Police said the owner of the Ford Cargo van has been cooperative and has taken the vehicle to the department twice. On Saturday, police said a black spray painted van was described as the vehicle that was suspected in being involved in an attempted abduction of a 10-year old boy. Police said it is a continuing investigation and are still looking for tips from the community. Chief Ray Mossman said there is a possibility that the vehicle of interest is not the vehicle involved in the incident.
The name of the van's owner has not been released. Police are encouraging parents to teach their children about safety and to report any suspicious vehicles.
"It's kind of like a Mayberry town. A little Mayberry town," said Kenova resident Christina Nelson.
That's why reports of an attempted abduction in Kenova sent a wave of panic through parents.
Carl Ward said, "It is shocking considering you don't hear of that a lot and you know it's awful just because of all the kids that are on the streets here all the time."
Police say they believe they have identified the man who allegedly tried to abduct a boy along the 16-hundred block of Poplar Street Saturday afternoon. The 10-year-old gave a detailed description of the cargo van and two men involved in the alleged incident. He said it was an older model Ford cargo van spray painted black, and the driver was a white man in his 50s or 60s, with a flat top hair cut and long gray beard.
While there may be a break in the case, parents aren't quite ready to let their guards down.
"I know this morning when they were getting on the bus I watched them closer when they were getting on the bus," said Nelson.
Nelson has seven children in her home, including three foster children, from seven months old to 17- years- old, and also babysits young children. She used the incident as an opportunity to talk to them about potential dangers. "I just explained to them that that's why we make them stay close to home because they're always fussing about going further with their friends and on their bikes," she said.
She said it's about important communication with kids to help keep them safe.
Police said they believe they have identified the van and driver suspected in the attempted child abduction in Kenova.
On Monday, Kenova police said the suspected van's owner was identified in connection to the attempted abduction that happened Saturday afternoon. Investigators said a 10-year old boy told them a Ford cargo van with two men inside approached him. Police said there were two other similar incidents reported with the suspect's description.
No charges have been filed at this time.
Police in Wayne County got a report of an attempted kidnapping of a 10-year old in the 1600 block of Poplar Street in Kenova Saturday afternoon.
Kenova police are looking for a 1985 Ford cargo van, spray-painted black with a flat gray primer, similar to the model shown in the photo.
The driver of the van was described as a white man between 50 and 60 years old, bald with a long gray beard.
A passenger in the van was also a white man, with black and gray hair.
At least two other similar incidents have been reported to Kenova police involving the same vehicle and occupants.
Anyone with information about where the vehicle or the occupants may be is asked to call Kenova police.
