A hit and run suspect was in court Friday for her sentencing. The sister of the man killed, Dennis James, choked back tears as she reflected on the night of the accident.
"The worst part was going back to my parents' house, and looking at my dad, shaking my head and telling him he's not here," she said
It has been more than a year since James, 47, was killed in a hit and run, and now his family finally has found some closure and justice.
James was crossing Elk River Road in Elkview when he was hit by a car in 2012.
When police responded that night, the person responsible for the accident had fled the scene.
After an extensive investigation by police, Lynsey Taylor was arrested.
"If I could, I would take it all back," said Taylor, "I wish I wouldn't seen Mr. James in the road. I wish I would've avoided him."
Police said Taylor claimed to have hit a deer that night, and not James.
But police found the damage to her car was consistent with what caused James's fatal head injury.
"I do believe you feel remorse," Judge Carrie Webster said. "It is your judgement and choices that will be before this court."
In front of the James family, Taylor was given one year in jail on Friday, moments after apologizing for her crime.
“I hope to live my life better, to teach my child better, to make up for what I did,” she said. “I’m truly and profoundly sorry for everything. I want his family to know that if I could, I would take it back."
Taylor is pregnant and, out of concern for the baby's health, Judge Carrie Webster is giving her about a month after the baby's delivery before she has to report to jail to serve her sentence.
