Huntington , Cabell County , West Virginia
Huntington police arrested a man Friday they said was wanted in connection with the robbery of a woman in a Kroger parking lot and the assault of a Marshall student that took place a few blocks from the university.
Duane Scott Maynard, 26, of Huntington will be charged with second-degree robbery in connection with a 10 p.m. June 13 robbery of a 60-year-old woman in the Kroger parking lot on Seventh Avenue, according to a news release from police. During the incident, police said, a witness chased Maynard and stabbed the suspect while defending himself. The suspect fled the area in a vehicle.
Police said while investigating that robbery, they linked Maynard to the assault of a 24-year-old Marshall University medical student on Jan. 9 that took place in the 1300 block of 15th Street. The student was on the way home from her studies. Maynard will be charged with first-degree robbery for that incident, police said.
Maynard will be lodged in the Western Regional Jail awaiting his arraignment.
Huntington police are asking for the public's help after a Marshall University medical student was brutally attacked and put in the hospital.
Police said that the attack happened at 7 p.m. Wednesday between the 1300 and 1400 blocks of 15th Street. The 24-year old woman was walking home when she was beaten. The woman remembers nothing from the attack, but witnesses say they heard a woman screaming and a struggle ensue. The suspect got away with the woman's phone and was last seen running down 15th Street. The only description of the suspect is that it was a man wearing dark clothing.
The woman went to find help when she collapsed. She is now recovering in the hospital with face and head injuries.
Police believe this was a random attack. Police do not have a description of the suspect and need the public's assistance. Anyone with information is asked to call 304-696-4420.
