A famous 1930s radio personality visits an Ohio home while on a lecture tour, slips on a patch of ice and is forced to stay and recuperate for weeks.
In the process, he reigns terror down on all around him. Arts Resources For The Tri-State presents the period comedy, "The Man Who Came To Dinner."
"It's a Kaufman and Hart comedy," Gene Anthony, the director said. "Moss Hart and George S. Kaufman were two very famous comic theatre writers in the mid-20th century and their material still holds up. This is a very funny play and it still plays very well."
Radio star Sheridan Whiteside is the focus of the play. His personality dominates the action, as his obnoxious and arrogant behavior turns the quiet household upside down. Whiteside is one of theatre's classic characters and the man tackling the role says he's happy to have the chance to bring him to life.
"Unfortunately a lot of people said, this is the perfect role for you Mike," Mike Murdock, who portrays Whiteside said. "But it's one of the greatest roles in American theatre. It's just, I'm on stage nearly the entire show. Boy, it's a lot of lines to learn. But it's very, very funny."
The story, which is set three quarters of a century ago, offers a snapshot of a very different era. The actors say its a chance to travel back and recreate a simpler time where people were more civil to one another. Well, most people.
"It's fun to kind of do research and look at old pictures or movies," Amy Knell Carlson who portrays Maggie said. "In this case we've got a movie and old plays where we can look at photographs and kind of try to replicate but put your own spin on it. I think it's fun as an actress because it also helps you become someone else."
