The Mingo County corruption scandal that has led to the arrest of a circuit judge has drawn national media attention.
ABC’s “Good Morning America,” the Washington Post, the New York Times and the Huffington Post are just some of the media outlets that have broadcast or published stories about Mingo County Circuit Court Judge Michael Thornsbury.
Thornsbury was charged Thursday with abusing his power and commandeering a grand jury in a failed attempt to frame a romantic rival for crimes. The judge is accused of having an affair with his secretary and then attempting to have drugs planted under her husband’s vehicle, conspiring to have her husband arrested on a false larceny charge and then stacking and influencing a grand jury investigating the case.
U.S. Attorney Booth Goodwin announced details of the arrest on Thursday during a news conference. A state trooper, Brandon Moore was placed on administrative leave Thursday following the indictment. He is under an internal State Police investigation for allegedly helping the judge plot against Thornsbury’s romantic rival.
In a separate case that also has rocked Mingo County, County Commissioner Dave Baisden was arrested Thursday and charged with extortion for misusing his office to try to buy tires from a county supplier at a discount.
