The Kanawha County Sheriff's Office is sporting a new ride.
The Lenco Bearcat is an 18,000-pound, steel-armored vehicle that allows deputies to respond to high-risk situations. Cpl. Brian Humphreys with the Kanawha County Sheriff's Office said the vehicle adds another layer of protection for deputies and victims during dangerous situations.
"This affords them a level of protection that they haven't had before, and if it allows them to cover ground to get to the scene of an incident without exposing themselves," Humphreys said.
Kanawha County deputies used the SWAT vehicle this week during a standoff in Sherwood Forest with a man who police said was holed up in a home and was firing shots.
The armored truck seats 11 people, has a number of cameras, bulletproof glass windows and cost $276,000. The purchase of the SWAT vehicle was funded by multiple counties.
There is currently one other Lenco Bearcat in West Virginia. It is stationed in Berkeley County.
