Ashland , Boyd County , West Virginia
Nearly 150 people were laid off from their positions at King's Daughters Medical Center in Ashland.
The announcement was made Thursday morning for 148 employees in the support, administrative and supervisory areas, according to a news release from the hospital. Some of those who were affected were offered new positions within the hospital.
The hospital cited the decline in patient volumes and reimbursement levels for the job cuts. The staffing levels for direct patient care will not be changed, the news release said.
President and Chief Executive Officer Fred Jackson said it was a difficult decision to make.
"Together, we have done everything possible to avoid this situation, including cutting operating expenses, combining areas where that made sense and improving our operations through process innovation. Those efforts have helped us greatly," Jackson said.
Jackson said their efforts helped to preserve the jobs of the 3,831 people who are still employed through the health system.
