Huntington police said they have seen a recent spike in the number of break-ins on the city's South Side.
Several car windows were smashed over the weekend, including a few in the 100 block of 11th Avenue. Smash-and- grab thieves target cars with loose change and electronics that they can see through the window.
Toiano Brown's garage was broken into recently. He has also had tires stolen right off of his car, so he is not taking any more chances. He said he has put new locks on the doors and additional locks on the garage. Once he has everything in place in the garage, he puts chains in place to make things extra secure.
"I had to go out and purchase all the items that got stolen, so I was pretty upset," Brown said.
Police said the best advice is to not leave any valuables in your car, even if it's locked.
