The suspect in a Monday morning stand off in Charleston, Mark Bramble, was shot in the head. He told police he shot himself, but it's not known if he also suffered injuries in a gunfire exchange with police. Bramble was taken to CAMC General Hospital, where he underwent surgery and remains under evaluation.
Bramble was a lawyer in the worker's compensation division of the state attorney general's office. Attorney general Patrick Morrisey says Bramble was employed by his office for about a year, and Bramble had submitted his resignation from the job just last Thursday. The resignation was set kick in officially August 30th.
"We're relieved that no one in his family or in the neighborhood, or any law enforcement officials, we hurt today and that they're safe. That's the most important thing. I know all of us, our hearts go out for those involved in the incident. Details related to this matter are still murky, and police will conduct a thorough investigation. So it would be inappropriate to comment further at this time," said Morrisey.
Before working for the attorney general's office, Bramble got in some hot water with the Lawyer Disciplinary Board, but was only "admonished," not punished. The trouble came after Bramble listened to hours of confidential recordings of phone calls from the South Central Jail. The calls he listened to were made by James Montgomery, who has long been considered a suspect in the death of Brambles two-year-old son more than 10 years ago. But Montgomery, nor anyone else, has ever been charged with the crime.
Montgomery remains in a Georgia prison on charges not related to Bramble's son's death. Montgomery was at one time in a relationship with Bramble's ex-wife, the mother of the child who died.
Police are still trying to determine if the death of Bramble's son or his job resignation are in any way connected to this Monday's incident..
