Help is on the way for nuisance flooding in Huntington.
Mayor Steve Williams announced Monday the hiring of Sherry Wilkins as the new storm water director for the city.
Employees at Fantastic Sams on First Street may know the frustrations of flooded viaducts better than others."When traffic is blocked or has stopped in general, then the salon basically dies, our employees paychecks go down dramatically," said master stylist Bret Joseph.
The main artery into town is vital to their business. "The traffic and the exposure is the livelihood of the salon," he said.
Wilkins' job is to fix those water woes. She spent more than 20 years working at the department of environmental protection teaching municipalities across the state more about the MS4 program, or Municipal Separate Storm Water System, and says that experience will help her - - help Huntington. In the process, that should alleviate nuisance flooding.
"I think managing water proactively will improve the quality of life for the citizens of Huntington. If storm water's managed, they're not going to have to worry about water coming into their basement, or driving through muddy streets," said Wilkins.
Mayor Steve Williams has high hopes for the partnership. "We want our regulators to look at us and say Huntington is being used as an example that other cities should emulate," he said.
Even Joseph is optimistic this flooding won't be an issue too much longer. "I believe they're getting on the ball and they're going to stay right in line and in focus," he said.
