Charleston , Kanawha County , West Virginia
A routine traffic stop led police to a meth bust Saturday.
One of the people arrested was a teacher.
Kanawha County Sheriff's deputies first arrested Earl Myers and Tina Belcher on a routine traffic stop on Greenbrier Street.
According to the criminal complaint, deputies found meth and meth-making materials in their car.
As the investigation continued, deputies said they asked the driver, Rodney Carte, if they could search his house.
Once they got to Carte's home on Gregory Lane, deputies said they found several items used to make meth, and a 10-year-old in the basement.
Deputies arrested Carte and the woman inside the home, Brenda Trapp, who deputies said is a substitute teacher for Kanawha County schools.
With classes just getting started this week, some parents said were stunned by the news.
"It's a big wake up call,” Cathy Nutter of Charleston said. “It's affecting every walk of life. We need to take a look at who's educating our children."
Mark Allen of Charleston said the arrest was troubling, given Trapp’s job.
"There are way too many positions thought of as honorable and dignified you could trust,” he said. “Now you hear more things, like teacher's being involved with students and drugs and other activities. It's really a shame."
Tonya Garcia said drug testing teachers could help keep leaders in the classroom clean.
“Didn't the state rule down testing for drugs?” she asked. “I think that needs to be put in place.”
Deputies said the father of the 10-year-old found in the basement is Thomas Huffman, and said he had been at the home making meth, but ran away. Police now have a warrant for his arrest.
Anybody with information on his whereabouts is asked to call 911.
