Cadets at the West Virginia State Police Academy are taking their training to new heights.
Police put their lives on the line every day to protect communities, but people sometimes forget they are there as a brotherhood and also have to protect each other.
For the past two days, State Police and HealthNet have been working together to make sure future police can do just that.
Car wrecks, shootings and everything in between - police are constantly put in the line of danger.
HealthNet is training cadets at the State Police Academy to make sure they know exactly what to do.
"This is real life training that's going to help prepare us for the road," Matt Traywick, of the Parkersburg Police Department, said.
And it was after the tragic reality of the Wallback shooting that both HealthNet and State Police decided the training, which offers real life scenarios and real life solutions, was a necessity.
Before becoming HealthNet's medical director and training the cadets, Mike Peterson was a police officer, and a lot of these lessons taught by HealthNet come from his personal experiences while on the force.
"Tragedy struck my life, and so now, I've had this opportunity to go on and get my life back,” he said. “Now I'm going to give back."
Peterson was severely injured twice in the line of duty. He knows how important it is to be prepared, and he wants to help cadets so that they stay alive, not just for each other, but for their families.
"You know, I lived it,” he said. “I grew up in it, and now, I have a chance to contribute back, even though I can't be a part of it anymore."
The cadets were sent through five different stations Friday, after spending the day in the classroom Thursday.
These cadets will also be certified after the training.
