Drivers’ commute through the Tri-State area could be a bit smoother now.
Completed construction is making a critical connection point safer for drivers.
Cars were once again rolling across the 12th Street bridge connecting commuters on U.S. Route 52 in Ohio to Ashland.
The bridge had been shut down since May, after damage from a car wreck caused some structural problems.
The bridge was scheduled to be reopened Monday morning, but workers were able to finish early, opening it to travelers Sunday.
For Joe Lutz, it was great to see the bridge back to normal.
"We all like normal, dont we?” he said, laughing.
Lutz commutes into Ashland every day from Ironton, Ohio.
He was relieved traffic headaches from having the bridge shut down are now over.
"Well, it will be a lot quicker commuting to work now," he said.
A twisted beam from the accident was the cause of the bridge closure.
Allen Blair, with Kentucky Department of Highways said the repairs cost upwards of $52,000.
"A lot of work has gone into this,” he said. “Contractors started working Friday to get the new beam installed."
The 12th Street Bridge in Ashland has re-opened, following work to replace a steel beam..
Crews opened the bridge to traffic Sunday afternoon.
Work was set to begin Friday on heavily traveled bridges in Kentucky and Ohio.
