Pinch , Kanawha County , West Virginia
On Friday, 28,000 students in Kanawha County will head back to school and the Kanawha County Sheriff's Department is making sure they will be safe.
The sheriff's department partnered with the Kanawha County Board of Education to have deputies inside the schools. The department was given about $30,000 for overtime funds from the Kanawha County Commission to be able to do this. Deputies will go to schools and spend about three hours at a time there. They want to be highly visible in the schools and develop relationships and trust with the students and staff.
School officials said it also promotes a safe atmosphere.
"It builds relationships with the staff, the students and police officers because a lot of times the kids see police officers as only going out and getting the bad guys, so the kids see something positive and it also makes everyone feel really safe," said Karen Messinger, second grade teacher at Pinch Elementary School. "It's a win- win situation for everyone involved."
The Kanawha County Emergency Ambulance Authority also will have ambulances around school zones on Friday to remind drivers to be cautious and move slowly near schools.
