Grief counselors were gathered at Clay County High School, and families were gathered at least at one Charleston hospital following a crash that killed a teen and injured 10 others.
Kara Conley, 17, a student at the high school, was killed in the accident that happened about 4 a.m. Wednesday.
At Clay County High School, a psychologist and a counselor were on campus in case students wanted to talk to them. School does not officially start at the high school until Aug. 22, but there were a number of activities under way at the school – football practice, band and cheerleader tryouts.
School officials said Conley was a latecomer to the school, where she first arrived as a sophomore, and she was looking forward to graduation. The driver of the vehicle, Isaac Murphy, 18, was a former Clay County High School student.
Meanwhile, the victims were being treated at least three Charleston area hospitals. Seven of the injured were being treated at Charleston Area Medical Center General Hospital, where families were gathered. The injuries ranged from minor to serious. One of the victims in the accident was treated and released. One was in the intensive care unit. Two others were admitted. Others were being treated in the emergency room, and they were going to be evaluated by a trauma surgeon to make sure they were OK before they were released.
