The revitalization of the housing projects in Huntington recently hit a speed bump.
The long-term plan for the low-income housing projects in the Fairfield West part of town is to build a 40-unit senior townhouse complex called "Huntington Gardens," but a private, nonprofit organization working with Housing and Urban Development is not getting tax credits to build it.
The Housing Development Corporation, which works with HUD. has been turned down for the second year in a row by the WV Housing Development Fund for tax credits. On the bright side, Larry Ellis, HUD's director of development, said the project will still move forward.
"It's a hindrance, inconvenience, but won't change the face of public housing long-term," Ellis said.
The demolition of Northcott Court is still on track for this fall. The entire revitalization project could take 15 years to complete.
