Georgetown, South Carolina
Federal officials say a 79-year-old West Virginia man killed when his plane crashed near the Georgetown County Airport was trying to do a 360-degree roll.
Peter Knudson of the National Transportation Safety Board said Tuesday that John Prince Harris of Charleston, W.Va., was 100 to 200 feet off the ground when his plane went down in the woods.
The findings are part of the federal agency's preliminary report on the July 29 crash. Authorities say Harris was on his way to visit family and was the pilot and only person onboard the two-seat decommissioned military aircraft when it went down about 1:20 p.m.
Harris' Folland Gnat T1 had left Charleston, W.Va., less than an hour earlier.
