The 30th Annual National Night Out was scheduled Tuesday night across the country.
The Charleston Police Department is just one of the agencies taking part in this national event. It will begin in the capital city with a public safety parade at 6 p.m. at the Orchard Manor housing development on the city's West Side. Police will then be visiting several neighborhoods throughout the city to promote awareness, safety and neighborhood unity. Neighborhoods that participate will be having special events such as block parties, cookouts, festivals, visits from local and public safety officials and youth events.
National Night Out, a yearlong community building campaign, is designed to heighten crime prevention awareness and to generate support for and to encourage participation in local anti-crime programs. Supporters said it also strengthens neighborhood spirit and the police-community partnership. Police said it also sends a message to criminals letting them know that neighborhoods are organized and fighting back.
