The University of Charleston has named a new men's basketball coach.
Dwaine Osborne takes the helm after former head basketball coach Mark Downey announced in July that he was leaving his alma mater after just three seasons.Osborne's hiring was announced Monday at a news conference.
Prior to joining the UC staff, Osborne served as the head men’s basketball coach at the University of Texas–Permian Basin for the past four seasons, according to a news release from UC. In his four seasons at the Texas school, Osborne led the program to two winning seasons and two conference tournament appearances, with the program having had one winning season in its history before his arrival.
Downey left UC for West Alabama- a division two school that competes in the Gulf South Conference East Division. Downey faced some off the court adversity following this past season when three of his players were arrested for first degree robbery in downtown Charleston.
In nine seasons as a head coach, Downey was named Coach of the Year six times. Downey has plenty of familiarity with the Gulf South Conference. He won a pair of Gulf South Championships while at Arkansas State prior to his time at UC. West Alabama was 6-12 in conference play last year. The school was 9-18 overall.
