Charleston , Kanawha County , West Virginia
A former Kanawha County employee is accused of selling heroin.
The suspect in the case, Chandra Ross, was working at the Kanawha County assessor's office when she was arrested, but officials said she has since been let go.
Ross has been charged with possession of heroin with the intent to deliver. She is being held in the South Central Regional Jail on a$250,000 bond. Her case been handed over to federal investigators.
According to court documents, members of the Kanawha County Bureau of Investigations had been investigating Ross for heroin conspiracy and executed a search warrant at her apartment on Lawndale Lane in Charleston on July 18. They said they found 110 grams of heroin.
According to the complaint, Ross was carrying nearly $2,000 and they found an additional $26,000 in cash in her apartment. They said there were also three handguns nearby, one of which had been reported stolen.
Ross has worked at the assessor's office for a few years. The office's attorney said she was a good employee and they were surprised by the allegations, but want to assure the public she never had access to money or personal information.
"She was a deputy assessor,” Stephen Sluss, of the assessor’s office, said. “Her job was to take deeds we received from the county clerk’s office and prepare them for processing. She handled strictly public documents. She did not handle any confidential information, nor did she handle what little bit of cash we have here."
Sluss said Ross left with two deputies and never came back to the office. Since she didn't give notice and hasn't shown up to work, she effectively has resigned and no longer works there, he said.
