Former Kanawha County assistant prosecutor Maryclaire Akers will serve as an assistant attorney general in the Consumer Protection Division of West Virginia Attorney General Patrick Morrisey’s office.
Akers’ first day in her new position will be Aug. 12, according to a news release from Morrisey’s office.
The announcement comes less than six months after Akers took a job as the attorney for the West Virginia Ethics Commission, a post she took shortly after she was fired on Feb. 5 by Kanawha County Prosecutor Mark Plants as an assistant prosecutor.
Morrisey said he was pleased to have someone of Akers’ caliber joining his team.
“She is a well-respected attorney in the Kanawha Valley, and she will bring years of prosecutorial experience to the division and the office’s working group tasked with looking at the drug abuse epidemic plaguing our state,” the attorney general said.
Akers served many years as an assistant prosecutor with the Kanawha County Prosecutor’s Office, including a long-term stint as the first assistant and as a liaison with the U.S. Attorney’s Office.
Morrisey said Akers’ role with the office will be two-fold: to prosecute consumer fraud cases as part of the expanded mission of the Consumer Protection Division and to join an existing working group within the office that is evaluating the problems with prescription drug abuse in the state.
