West Virginia's public schools will have a new program focusing on oral health when classes begin later this month.
State dental director Dr. Jason Roush said prevention is a key aspect of the new program.
Roush told The Exponent Telegram that the program's lesson plans will focus on the needs of each student group, from pre-kindergarten to 12th grade.
Roush said regional oral health coordinators will provide oral health education training, promote good oral hygiene and help expand school-based dental sealant and fluoride projects.
West Virginia Dental Association executive director Richard Stevens said his group supports the new program. But he doesn't think it goes far enough. He said the Legislature should require all students to be examined by a dentist before they enter kindergarten or first grade.
