Federal funding cuts have slashed the budget of a state program that addresses diabetes and other chronic diseases.
The Division of Health Promotion and Chronic Disease lost more than $2 million in federal funding. Director Jessica Wright said federal funding comprises about 90 percent of the division's budget.
Wright told the Charleston Gazette that the division had focused on public awareness, prevention activities and intervention. Now, the focus mainly will be on basic education and awareness activities.
She said the funding cuts haven't resulted in layoffs. But the division won't be able to sustain some leadership positions.
