Poca , Putnam County , West Virginia
A bit of history started coming down Wednesday in Poca, and some onlookers were able to get a piece of it.
A demolition crew started work on taking down the old Poca Middle School. The crew let onlookers, some excited children and others former students of the old school, take a piece of the demolition home, so they could have some memorabilia.
While some were sad to see the old school go, others see it as progress. The space will be used as a drop-off spot for buses once it is cleared. A new Poca Middle School is combined with the elementary school and already stands nearby.
The old Poca Middle School has plenty of history. It was a high school when it opened in 1926, and it became a middle school in the 1970s.
The demolition crew hopes to have the demolition completed within three weeks. There may be some paving still taking place when school starts, but no traffic issues are expected.
