Hundreds of workers at Frontier Communications rallied Saturday in solidarity for a new contract.
Union members of the Communications Workers of America came from four different states to rally in Charleston, showing solidarity and hoping union workers at Frontier will get a fair contract.
A CWA brother here is the same as it is across the country, so us coming together like this shows them we are one and will move as one.,” John Cosgrove, of Local 4375 in Athens, said.
The contract, set to expire, covers former Verizon employees, who became Frontier employees when the company bought Verizon's landline business as part of an $8.6 billion deal in 2009.
“We're not asking to go a massive amount forward,” CWA worker Bill Champe said. “We just don't want to go backwards. We feel like the company has made enough money.”
The current contract covers 1600 employees in the state and is set to expire at midnight on Aug. 2.
A spokesperson with Frontier sent an email to Eyewitness News Saturday afternoon.
"Frontier is focused on renegotiating a fair contract with the CWA through good-faith negotiations,” the email read. “Our goal remains constant to provide West Virginians with competitively-priced, 21st century broadband communications services that create more jobs, better educate our children and make a meaningful contribution to improving the overall quality of life in the state."
Most workers said they were optimistic.
“Well, we've got a good negotiations team and they're still talking,” CWA 2001 President Kenneth Williams said. “As long as they're talking, that's good. Hopefully we'll come to a good resolution by the 2nd.”
The current contract expires Friday at midnight.
