Putnam County will test its new disaster siren warning system at 12 p.m. Wednesday.
Five sirens that are located throughout Putnam County will be activated to test the system for the first time. The test will include a loud alert tone along with voice messages.
"We want the entire community to be aware of the test," said Frank Chapman, director of emergency management. "It is important that people in the communities become familiar with the tone. We are doing all we can to ensure that local residents are informed about the time and date when this fairly loud test will occur."
The system will be activated only in case of life-threatening emergencies when there is not advance warning and it is imperative that people immediately seek shelter indoors, Chapman said.
Emergencies that would likely require the system activation include a natural weather disaster or man-made or chemical disaster.
In the event of an emergency that would require the system, Putnam 911 Center would activate it.
"It is the latest in a series of enhancements we have introduced to be as prepared as we can be in the event of an emergency." Chapman said.
The sirens are located in Hurricane, Poca, Winfield, Teays Valley and Eleanor.
Tests for the system will take place the fourth Wednesday of each month at 12 p.m.
