Flash flooding in Huntington Monday caused a lot of problems around town. Now the city is looking for help. Huntington Mayor Steve Williams wants to hire a water-sewer director, and he is also asking homeowners to do their part.
The water lines in town are more than 80 years old, and it would cost more than $500 million to replace them. But the mayor said not only does the city need more street cleaners to keep the drains clear, but residents can do their part, too.
"They can disconnect their downspouts and have them go into rain barrels," Williams said. "My wife and I are looking into connecting it to rain barrels and then leach out to flower beds and such."
Here is another tip to help prevent flooding in your neighborhood -- after mowing, clean grass and debris from around the storm water drains.
Williams said he hopes to name the new director of water-sewer next month.
