A Charleston man was charged with intimidation of a witness after he allegedly harassed witnesses to a murder case in which his brother has been charged.
Tremain Straughter, 32, was charged Monday for incidents that occurred between June 16 and July 1, according to a criminal complaint filed in Kanawha County Magistrate Court.
The complaint said a woman contacted the sheriff’s department after being harassed by Straughter. She reported that she and her husband were witnesses to a murder case when Straughter’s brother, Tremale, was accused of shooting to death Donald Taylor on Emory Avenue in the Rand area in February. Tremale Straughter was indicted and arraigned on those murder charges on June 6.
About 2 one-half weeks later, the woman reported that she and her husband and her young children were walking to their apartment when they saw a car that Tremain Straughter had been driving parked in the gravel lot in front of their apartment in the Malden-Rand area. The woman said they continued to walk toward the apartment and saw Tremain Straughter standing outside by the vehicle near the door to their apartment. She said Tremain Straughter started yelling at them about talking to the police and he would do “something about it if they didn’t keep their mouths shut.” The woman said they ignored him and went inside the apartment and locked the door. She said he continued for several minutes, pounding on the door and screaming.
The complaint said the next day or two days later Tremain Straughter came back to the apartment and starting pounding and kicking on the door and screamed at them. She said he cursed them for “trying to lock up my brother for life” and threatened to put a bullet in their heads and “snap your kids’ necks and hang them.” She said his tirade continued for 20 to 30 minutes.
The woman said several threatening messages also appeared on Tremain Straughter’s Facebook page.
