The city of Charleston plans to demolish the abandoned Charleston building that caught fire early Monday morning.
Building Commissioner Tony Harmon said his office made contact with the late homeowner's children. The daughter lives in Charleston, the son in Florida.
Harmon said the children are in the process of signing paperwork that would allow the city to demolish the building. An asbestos test is expected to be done within a week, with the overall process taking a month.
Charleston Fire Capt. Ken Tyree said the Stockton Street house caught fire a couple weeks ago and has been targeted by squatters in the past.
Tyree said someone likely threw a incendiary or combustible item through a small back window, setting the fire. Damage has been estimated at $1,100.
Charleston firefighters said an early morning fire that damaged an abandoned Charleston building was intentionally set.
Charleston Fire Capt. Ken Tyree said that it appears someone threw a incendiary or combustible item through a small back window, setting the fire.
The structure didn't have any power hooked up, Tyree said. Firefighters responded to a call at that same structure a couple of weeks ago. The investigation into the blaze continues.
Fire crews are trying to figure out what caused a fire at an abandoned building in Charleston, Monday.
It happened at a boarded up home at around 4 a.m. on Stockton Street.
Charleston fire officials said when they got on scene they found a small fire in an upstairs room. They're not sure if it was accidental or intentional but said they have a problem with squatters inside these buildings.
The city had boarded up the home within the past month.
Washington Street West was closed for about an hour while crews were on the scene.
