West Virginia flags are being displayed at half-staff at all state-owned facilities in honor of an airman killed in Germany during World War II.
Gov. Earl Ray Tomblin on Friday ordered the flags lowered from dawn until dusk on Sunday, which is the day of services for Sgt. Jerome Kiger at Mannington Memorial Park.
Kiger was a tail gunner on a B-24 Liberator bomber that was shot down July 21, 1944.
He was declared missing in action following the crash and then declared killed in action in 1945 though his remains and the crash site hadn't been located.
But the remains of Kiger and another crewman were found in the plane's wreckage in Germany in 2008. Kiger's identity was confirmed by DNA testing.
