The 2013 Boy Scout Jamboree is now kicking into high gear as the opening ceremony was conducted Tuesday morning in Fayette County.
More than 30,000 Scouts from all over the country and several parts of the world are being joined by 6,000 volunteers for the Jamboree at the Summit Bechtel Family National Scout Reserve. The opening ceremony was held at AT&T Arena.
AT&T’s chief executive officer spoke to the Scouts. Gov. Earl Ray Tomblin also was in attendance. Tomblin also plans to be at the Jamboree on Wednesday, which has been declared West Virginia Day.
Now that the opening ceremony has taken place, the Scouts will really be diving into activities, including zip lining, rappelling, swimming, scuba diving and rafting.
The Jamboree is a massive undertaking that is requiring lots of coordination and extra manpower. Dozens and dozens of troopers, hundreds of West Virginia National Guard members and hundreds of security personnel are providing support at the Jamboree.
