The man accused of hitting and killing a young girl in Wayne County this weekend is out on bond.
Brandon Cornette is charged with negligent homicide after police say he was under the influence when he hit and killed Icel Newsome, 6.
Deputies said the little girl died Saturday night along Route 52 in Wayne County after Cornette hit her with his car. Deputies said a blood test revealed oxycodone in Cornette's system.
Neighbors who witnessed the incident said they are still in shock over what happened.
Taylor York saw it happen from his front porch. "The two brothers crossed the street first because the traffic was clear, but the father hollered at the little girl to stop because there was a car coming, and I guess stuff just went bad from there," he said.
He said he and several other neighbors tried to help, but it was too late. He said he stopped the car Cornette was driving.
Police reports said Cornette told deputies he tried to stop, but they said they found no evidence to support that at the scene. Cornette has been released on bond.
A six year-old girl is dead after being hit by a car in Wayne County Saturday.
Police said the driver of the car was driving under the influence at the time.
According to the Herald-Dispatch, Wayne County deputies arrested Brandon Michael Cornette, 31, and charged him with felony negligent homicide and DUI causing death.
The accident took place in the Fort Gay area near Tolsia High School.
Police said the girl was hit by the car and taken to the hospital, where she later died.
