Clarksburg, Harrison County , West Virginia
U.S. Attorney William Ihlenfeld II said resignation was sufficient punishment for the former Clarksburg police chief and a lieutenant who stepped down to avoid federal criminal charges.
Ihlenfeld told the Charleston Gazette that former chief Marshall Goff and former Lt. Tim Smith didn't receive any special treatment.
Last week, the men agreed to step down to avoid federal charges of civil rights violations and making false statements to federal authorities. The charges stemmed from the delayed arrest of a city councilman in a domestic assault case.
Ihlenfeld said if the men had been prosecuted, they possibly would have remained in their positions. He said authorities wanted to address that immediately.
He declined to provide details about the former officers' conduct.
Under the agreement, both Goff and Smith are barred from ever working as police officers again.
